The Claims Process

How to File a Hail Damage Claim in Missouri

8 min read · Updated August 21, 2026 · By 888 PDR

A hailstorm rolls across the Kansas City metro, the parking lot at work sounds like a drum line for ten minutes, and by the time you walk out the sky is clear and your hood looks like a golf ball. From that moment forward, almost everything that happens is paperwork — and the people who come out of a Missouri hail claim happiest are usually the ones who understood the paperwork on day one.

This guide walks through how a vehicle hail claim works in Missouri from the first phone call to the last repair invoice. It is written for drivers in Kansas City, Independence, Lee's Summit, Blue Springs, Liberty, and the Kansas-side suburbs that share the same storm tracks. It is general information about how the process typically runs, not legal advice, and it is not a description of what any particular insurer owes you — your policy language governs that.

Start by finding out whether you carry comprehensive coverage

Hail is weather. Weather damage to a vehicle is handled under the comprehensive portion of an auto policy — sometimes printed as "other than collision" or abbreviated "comp" on your declarations page. Comprehensive is the same coverage that responds to a cracked windshield, a deer strike, a falling limb, or theft. If your policy carries liability only, there is no coverage on your own vehicle for hail, no matter how severe the storm was.

Pull up your declarations page before you call anyone. You are looking for two things: a line item for comprehensive, and the deductible attached to it. Those two facts determine whether you have a claim at all and roughly what the arithmetic looks like. Note that the comprehensive deductible is frequently a different number than the collision deductible on the same policy, so read the specific line rather than assuming.

What to do in the first 48 hours

Nothing in the first two days is complicated, but doing it in order saves you weeks later.

  1. 1Write down the storm date and where the vehicle was parked. Insurers cross-reference reported dates against weather data, and "sometime in May" invites questions that "the evening of May 14, parked at 27th and Prospect" does not.
  2. 2Photograph the vehicle before you move it, if the lot is safe. Wide shots that show the whole car plus close-ups of the hood, roof, and trunk are enough. Photos of hailstones next to a coin or your hand are genuinely useful for establishing stone size.
  3. 3Check the glass. A cracked windshield, a shattered sunroof, or a broken rear window changes the urgency and often gets scheduled separately from the dent work.
  4. 4Get the vehicle under cover if a second round is in the forecast. Kansas City frequently gets multiple hail days in the same week, and a second event on top of the first complicates the estimate for everyone.
  5. 5Call your insurer and open the claim, or open it in the app. Write down the claim number the moment you receive it.

One thing not to do: nothing at all. Auto policies generally require prompt notice of a loss, and while "prompt" is not defined as a specific number of days in most personal auto forms, a claim reported months later on a vehicle that has since been driven through two more storm seasons is a harder claim to document.

The inspection: adjuster, drive-in center, or photo app

After a large Missouri hail event, carriers set up capacity fast. In the Kansas City area you will typically be routed to one of three paths, and which one you get depends on the insurer, the storm's size, and how quickly you filed.

A catastrophe drive-in event

The carrier rents a lot or a hotel parking structure, brings in adjusters from out of state, and works vehicles in volume. These are efficient for glass and for a quick number on the file. They are also outdoor inspections, often in daylight, with no controlled lighting, which is the single hardest environment in which to count shallow dents accurately.

A field adjuster appointment

A staff or independent adjuster comes to your home or workplace. Better than a drive-in for conversation, still an outdoor inspection with the same lighting limitation.

A photo or virtual estimate

The app walks you through a photo sequence and produces an estimate from the images. This is the fastest route to a first payment and the least accurate for hail specifically. A phone camera in a driveway will not capture a shallow dimple that a lighting board reveals instantly.

What a real hail estimate contains

A paintless dent repair estimate for hail is not a single number pulled out of the air. It is built from a matrix: for each panel, how many dents, in what size ranges, and whether the panel has complications such as aluminum construction, glue-pull requirements, bracing behind the metal, or a roof with a headliner that must come down.

  • Panel-by-panel dent counts, separated into size tiers rather than lumped together.
  • Access labor — headliner removal for roof work, interior trim, and lamp or moulding removal so a tool can reach behind the metal.
  • R&I (remove and install) line items for anything that must come off the car and go back on.
  • Conventional repair or replacement lines for any panel too far gone for PDR, plus refinish time if paint is broken.
  • Glass, if applicable, which is often handled by a separate vendor on a separate authorization.

When our Kansas City shop writes an estimate, the vehicle is washed, dried, pulled inside, and read under lighting boards before a single line is typed. That is the whole reason our number and a hood-in-a-parking-lot number tend to differ, and it is the basis on which a supplement gets documented and submitted.

How the money moves

Expect the payment to arrive in pieces rather than all at once. The first payment reflects the initial estimate. If the repair facility documents additional damage or additional operations, that supplement is submitted to the carrier, reviewed, and paid separately — often after the work is complete.

Your deductible is subtracted from what the carrier pays. It does not disappear because a supplement was approved and it is not something a repair facility can make vanish. Any shop that suggests otherwise is describing something you do not want your name attached to.

Who repairs the vehicle

Insurers maintain networks of preferred shops, and after a large storm you will very likely be handed a list or offered an appointment at a network facility. A referral is a referral. It is not an instruction, and choosing a facility outside a carrier's network is a routine, everyday occurrence in the collision and PDR industry.

The Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance (DCI) is the state agency that regulates insurers operating in Missouri and takes consumer complaints about claim handling. If you believe a claim is being handled improperly, that agency — not the carrier's own escalation line — is the neutral place to raise it. Their consumer services division can explain what your policy and Missouri regulations require in your specific situation, which is a question no repair shop should answer for you.

Practically, the thing that matters most is whether the facility can document its work in a form the carrier can act on. A shop that photographs, measures, and writes a clean supplement is what turns a disputed estimate into an approved one.

How long a Kansas City hail claim takes

Two variables dominate: how many other cars were hit, and whether your repair requires parts. In a small, localized storm, a claim opened Monday can be inspected the same week and repaired the following one. After a metro-wide event that damages tens of thousands of vehicles, the inspection queue alone can run several weeks, and every body shop and PDR facility from Olathe to Liberty is booked.

  • Pure PDR with no parts: usually the fastest path, because there is nothing to order and nothing to paint.
  • PDR with a replaced panel or moulding: add parts lead time.
  • Anything requiring refinish: add paint and cure time.
  • Glass: often the quickest single item and frequently scheduled first.

Rental coverage, if you carry it, is a separate line on your policy with its own daily and total limits. Ask what those limits are early rather than discovering them on day twenty-two.

Avoidable mistakes we see on Missouri files

  • Judging the car in a driveway on an overcast day and deciding there is no damage worth reporting. Overcast light hides hail dents almost perfectly.
  • Accepting a photo-app estimate as the final word and cashing out without a physical inspection.
  • Losing the estimate PDF. Ask for it in writing every time; you will want to compare versions.
  • Letting the claim sit while the vehicle keeps collecting weather. Dating damage gets harder with every subsequent storm.
  • Signing a blanket authorization at a pop-up operation working out of a hotel lot after a storm. Storm chasers follow Missouri hail every spring, and the warranty is only as durable as the company behind it.

Frequently asked questions

Does comprehensive coverage always apply to hail damage in Missouri?

Comprehensive is the coverage that ordinarily responds to weather damage, including hail, but the terms of your specific policy control. If your declarations page shows liability only, there is no coverage for damage to your own vehicle. Read the comprehensive line and its deductible before you file.

How long do I have to file a hail claim in Missouri?

Auto policies generally require prompt notice of a loss rather than a fixed number of days, and the requirement is written into the policy rather than being a single universal deadline. File as soon as you know the vehicle was hit. If significant time has passed, still call — but expect more questions about when and where the damage occurred.

Can my insurer require me to use a specific repair shop?

Insurers commonly recommend network shops and may offer to schedule you at one. Whether and how a carrier can restrict your choice is governed by your policy and by Missouri insurance regulation, so direct that question to the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance rather than relying on either the carrier's or a shop's characterization of it.

The adjuster's estimate looks far too low. What now?

That is common on hail, especially after an outdoor or photo-based inspection. Have the vehicle inspected under proper lighting at a repair facility and have the shop document what it finds. The additional scope is submitted to your carrier as a supplement and reviewed against the original estimate.

Will filing a hail claim raise my premium?

Rating practices vary by carrier and are affected by your overall claim history, your vehicle, your ZIP code, and statewide loss trends. Weather claims are typically treated differently from at-fault collisions, but no shop can tell you what a specific insurer will do with your specific policy. Your agent can.

Do I still owe my deductible if the shop finds more damage?

Yes. The deductible is the portion of the loss you retain under your policy, and a supplement changes the total scope of the repair, not the deductible. It is subtracted from what the insurer pays regardless of how the estimate is revised.
